CODE BLACK: EASTER SUNDAY / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - Code Black

The water rose past our ankles.

Grant’s team worked on the hatch above.

The lock would not open.

Mason backed toward the far wall.

He knew the chamber better than we did.

“There’s another exit,” I said.

He smiled.

“For me.”

I rushed him.

Daniel grabbed my jacket.

Lily struck him with the fallen gun.

He collapsed.

Margaret searched the control panel.

“The emergency tunnel is behind cabinet seven.”

Mason fired.

The bullet struck Margaret in the side.

She fell against the servers.

Lily screamed.

I drove Mason into the wall.

He hit me across the face with the pistol.

I tasted blood.

He swung again.

I trapped his arm.

The old training was still there.

But age had taken speed.

Pain had taken patience.

Mason drove his knee into my ribs.

We fell into the rising water.

The timer reached thirty seconds.

Lily pulled Margaret toward the cabinet.

“Dad!”

I looked at Mason.

He looked at the timer.

For the first time, he was afraid.

He had planned to leave earlier.

The emergency tunnel had jammed.

The archive was becoming his grave too.

I released him.

He stared at me.

“Why?”

“Because Lily needs me alive more than I need you dead.”

I ran to cabinet seven.

Grant’s team pounded from above.

Rachel’s voice came through my earpiece.

“I found the bridge plans.”

“There’s a manual release behind the lower server panel.”

Lily ripped open the panel.

Wires filled the space.

“Which one?”

“Black cable with a yellow stripe.”

There were three.

The timer reached fifteen seconds.

Margaret lifted her head.

“The center one.”

Lily pulled it.

Nothing happened.

Ten seconds.

Mason laughed weakly.

“She lied.”

Margaret reached into the panel.

She tore out the second cable.

The far wall opened.

A narrow tunnel appeared.

“Move!” I shouted.

Lily dragged Margaret.

Daniel crawled after us.

Mason remained behind.

He stared at the servers.

His entire life was stored there.

Every secret that had given him power.

He could not leave it.

“Evan!” I shouted.

He looked at me.

For one second, I saw the teenager from the courtroom.

Then the man returned.

He turned toward the central drive.

The timer reached zero.

The chamber exploded.

The force threw us through the tunnel.

Water and fire chased us toward the river exit.

I covered Lily with my body.

The tunnel collapsed behind us.

Grant’s team pulled us through an access grate beneath the bridge.

Daniel was arrested.

Margaret was rushed into surgery.

Mason’s body was not recovered.

Neither were the servers.

For twelve hours, everyone assumed the archive was gone.

Then Rachel called Grant.

She had discovered that the Saint Mercy server automatically synchronized with the bridge archive every Easter.

The damaged drive was not our only copy.

Before it fell into the water, Rachel’s recorder had captured the wireless encryption handshake.

The state lab used it to access an off-site cloud server.

The Resurrection files opened.

Everything survived.

Every video.

Every ledger.

Every victim.

Every name.

Richard’s attorneys withdrew before sunset.

Daniel offered to cooperate.

Margaret survived surgery and confessed to Eleanor’s murder.

Judges resigned.

Inspectors were arrested.

Two city officials attempted to leave the country.

But one question remained.

Mason’s body had never been found.

Three days later, Lily and I returned to my house.

The kitchen still smelled faintly of glazed ham.

My cold coffee remained beside the sink.

Lily stood in the doorway.

“It feels like a different life.”

“It is.”

She placed her phone on the counter.

A new message appeared.

Unknown number.

She opened it.

A photograph filled the screen.

It showed Lily and me standing inside my kitchen.

Taken through the window.

Beneath it were four words.
