Chapter 15 - THE TRIAL

Seven months later, Charles Mercer entered federal court.
The case attracted national attention.
Reporters called it the Hargrove conspiracy.
Prosecutors called it something simpler.
Fraud.
Blackmail.
Kidnapping conspiracy.
Obstruction.
Witness intimidation.
Charles pleaded not guilty.
Then Rebecca Sloan testified.
Martin testified.
Anna testified.
Evelyn testified.
Finally, Grace took the stand.
Ethan sat behind the prosecutors.
Grace looked directly at Charles.
She described the day Evelyn took her upstairs.
The locked enclosure.
The sedatives.
The lies about Ethan.
The fear that her baby would not survive.
Charles’s attorney tried to make her look vindictive.
“Mrs. Hargrove, you personally investigated Mr. Mercer before these events, correct?”
“Yes.”
“You disliked him?”
“I distrusted him.”
“You wanted him removed from Hargrove Industries?”
“I wanted to know why millions of dollars were disappearing.”
The attorney stepped closer.
“And now Mr. Mercer is on trial partly because of information you collected.”
Grace looked at the jury.
“No.”
“He’s on trial because of what he chose to do after I found it.”
The courtroom went silent.
The verdict came after four days of deliberation.
Guilty.
On nearly every major count.
Charles showed no emotion.
Ethan did not celebrate.
Neither did Grace.
They simply held hands.
Evelyn’s case was different.
She pleaded guilty.
Her cooperation reduced her sentence.
Before sentencing, she asked permission to address Grace.
Grace agreed.
Evelyn stood before her.
“I told myself I was protecting my son.”
“I told myself I was protecting his future.”
“I told myself Charles gave me no choice.”
She swallowed.
“All of those were lies I used because the truth was harder.”
“The truth is that I was afraid.”
“And I made Grace pay for my fear.”
Grace listened.
Evelyn continued.
“I don’t ask for forgiveness.”
“I haven’t earned it.”
“I only want my granddaughter to grow up knowing that what I did was wrong.”
Grace’s eyes filled.
She did not hug Evelyn.
She did not tell her everything was okay.
She simply said three words.
“She will know.”
May you like
Evelyn nodded.
It was enough.
