Chapter 18 - The Quiet Brother

Daniel recognized the handwriting.

His uncle, Arturo.

Ricardo’s younger brother.

Arturo had stayed away from the investigation.

He told police he wanted nothing to do with family conflict.

He attended every court hearing and sat in the back row.

Silent.

Watching.

Daniel drove to Arturo’s house with Lucía and two officers.

They found the front door open.

Inside, boxes covered the living room floor.

Arturo was preparing to leave.

He raised his hands.

“I didn’t throw the brick.”

Daniel placed the note on the table.

“You wrote this.”

Arturo stared at it.

“I wrote those words years ago.”

“What?”

Arturo opened a drawer.

Inside were dozens of letters.

All addressed to Valeria.

None had been mailed.

The same sentence appeared in one.

You should have kept family matters private.

“My brother copied it,” Arturo said.

“Why?”

“To make you think I threatened Camila.”

Lucía searched the house.

Arturo sat heavily.

“I knew about Valeria.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“How much?”

“Everything.”

“And you did nothing.”

Arturo rubbed both hands over his face.

“I gave Ricardo the name of Casa Esperanza.”

Daniel stepped toward him.

“You helped steal my daughter.”

“I thought the child would be safer away from him.”

“You didn’t tell me she existed.”

“I was protecting the family company.”

There it was again.

The truth beneath every excuse.

Money.

Reputation.

Comfort.

Arturo continued.

“If Ricardo went to prison, thousands of people could have lost their jobs.”

“You chose a company over a woman and a child.”

“Yes.”

The blunt answer stopped Daniel.

Arturo did not ask forgiveness.

He didn’t deserve any.

Lucía found evidence that Ricardo had visited the apartment building the night the brick was thrown.

A traffic camera showed his car nearby before his arrest.

He had prepared the note in advance.

Even in hiding, he had tried to turn brother against brother.

Arturo agreed to testify about the illegal adoption and the ranch.

His testimony completed the case.

Months passed.

Sofia’s burns began to heal.

The scar on her cheek remained pink and raised.

She hated mirrors for a while.

Then one morning, she pressed a sticker directly onto the scar and laughed when it stuck.

I laughed too.

It was the first time the scar felt like part of her body instead of a crime scene.

Daniel lived in a rented room nearby.

He attended therapy.

He never used therapy as proof that I should take him back.

He visited Sofia according to a schedule.

He met Luciana only with her adoptive parents present.

He made no promises he could not keep.

Then the trial began.

On the first day, Mariela changed her plea.

Guilty.

But only after demanding one condition.

She wanted to speak to me alone.
