Chapter 13 - The Name Elena Changed

Elena closed the office door.

Sophia sat beside her.

Nico and Marco remained across from me.

Nobody left.

No more hidden conversations.

No more adults deciding which truths children were allowed to know.

Elena looked at Nico.

“The name Nico was not your first name.”

He frowned.

“What was it?”

“Gabriel.”

My chest tightened.

Valentina and I had chosen that name before he was born.

Gabriel Vittorio Rossi.

I had not spoken it aloud in twelve years.

Nico looked at me.

“You knew?”

“That was the name we gave you.”

He swallowed.

“Why did she change it?”

Elena answered.

“To hide you.”

“From Matteo?”

“Yes.”

She looked at Marco.

“I changed your name too.”

Marco folded his arms.

“What was mine?”

“Luca.”

He gave a bitter smile.

“So none of us were who we thought we were.”

Elena began crying.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Nico looked at her.

“Then what did Matteo mean about the switch?”

Elena took a long breath.

“During the fire, I carried three babies out of the maternity wing.”

Every person in the room froze.

“Three?”

I asked.

“Nico.”

“Marco.”

“And Marco’s twin.”

“Luca’s twin.”

Marco whispered.

“My brother.”

“Yes.”

“I got all three to the lower stairwell.”

“Then part of the ceiling collapsed.”

“A nurse took one child.”

“I carried the other two through the tunnel.”

I finally understood.

“You never knew which child the nurse took.”

“No.”

Marco’s face changed.

“So the boy who was adopted could be my brother.”

“Yes.”

“Or Nico?”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Nico turned toward me.

The fear in his face destroyed me.

“So I might not be your son.”

The room became silent.

I walked toward him.

“The DNA test says you are.”

“But Matteo says it can be fake.”

“Matteo says whatever keeps him in control.”

“But what if—”

“No.”

I put both hands on his shoulders.

“I do not care what name Elena gave you.”

“I do not care what Matteo files in court.”

“And I do not care what another test says tomorrow.”

His eyes searched mine.

“You came into my life as my son.”

“You stay in my life because I choose you.”

He stared at me.

Then his face crumpled.

For the first time, he let me pull him into my arms.

He shook silently against my chest.

I held him.

Twelve years too late.

But I held him.

Marco looked away to give us privacy.

Sophia wiped her eyes.

Later that evening, a second DNA laboratory confirmed the result.

Nico was Gabriel Vittorio Rossi.

My biological son.

There was no switch.

Matteo’s petition collapsed before sunset.

The adopted boy was almost certainly Marco’s twin.

The court approved contact through child services.

His new name was Daniel Hale.

He lived with a teacher and an architect in a quiet town two hours away.

They had adopted him as an infant.

They loved him.

That mattered.

Marco asked one question.

“Does he know?”

The social worker answered.

“He knows he was adopted.”

“But not this.”

“No.”

“Can I meet him?”

“If Daniel agrees.”

The meeting was scheduled for the following week.

For the first time since the nightmare began, something felt almost hopeful.

Then the prosecutor called.

Matteo wanted to speak to me.

Alone.

I almost refused.

Then the prosecutor said why.

“He says Isabella’s death was not caused by the fire.”

I went completely still.

May you like

“What is he claiming?”

“That Valentina killed her.”
