Chapter 1 - THE ONE-DOLLAR CAKE

“Can I buy the most expensive cake for my mommy?”

Three-year-old Mia Reyes held out a wrinkled one-dollar bill.

Vanessa Hail stared at it.

Then she laughed.

Not a soft laugh.

Not the kind adults use when a child says something cute.

It was sharp.

Mean.

The kind of laugh that makes a room go quiet.

“Oh, sweetheart,” Vanessa said, smoothing one hand over her cream silk dress. “That cake costs more than your mother makes in a year.”

Mia’s smile disappeared.

Behind her stood a four-tier white cake covered in sugar roses and gold leaf, the centerpiece for Vanessa’s engagement dinner that evening.

Mia looked down at her dollar.

“But I saved it.”

A florist stopped arranging roses.

One of the caterers looked away.

Vanessa tilted her head.

“That’s adorable. But one dollar isn’t money.”

Mia’s lower lip trembled.

“I want Mama to have the biggest one.”

“Why?”

“Because she always gets me things.”

Vanessa gave another little laugh.

“Well, your mother should probably teach you that wanting something doesn’t mean you can afford it.”

Mia stared at her.

She didn’t understand every word.

But she understood the tone.

Then Elena came running onto the terrace.

“Mia!”

She scooped her daughter into her arms.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Hail. She slipped out while I was getting dressed.”

Mia immediately buried her face in Elena’s shoulder.

Vanessa smiled.

“Maybe keep a closer eye on her.”

Elena’s jaw tightened.

“She’s three.”

“Yes. Which is probably a good age to start learning boundaries.”

Elena felt Mia’s tears against her neck.

That nearly broke her.

“Mama,” Mia whispered, “I just wanted you to have the pretty cake.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Oh, baby.”

“I have money.”

“I know.”

Vanessa sighed.

“Can we move on? I have two hundred guests coming tonight.”

Then a man’s voice came from the stone archway behind her.

“No.”

Vanessa froze.

So did everyone else.

Damian Cross stood there in a dark suit, his phone hanging loosely at his side.

He had heard everything.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Damian.”

He didn’t answer her.

His eyes were on Mia.

Then Elena.

Then the single dollar still clenched inside Mia’s tiny fist.

“How long have you been standing there?” Vanessa asked.

“Long enough.”

Her smile returned too quickly.

“You’re misunderstanding.”

“I heard you.”

“Damian—”

“I heard every word.”

Vanessa went silent.

Damian walked toward Mia and crouched until they were eye level.

“Hey.”

Mia sniffed.

“Hi, serious man.”

A caterer nearly smiled.

Damian did.

Just barely.

“Is that your money?”

Mia nodded.

“All of it?”

She nodded again.

“I saved forever.”

Elena quietly said, “Four months.”

Damian looked at the dollar.

“And you want to spend all of it on your mom?”

Mia whispered, “She never gets the big cake.”

Something shifted in Damian’s face.

He stood and turned to the pastry chef.

“How much?”

The chef blinked.

“Sir?”

“The cake.”

“Thirty-two hundred dollars.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Damian, don’t.”

He ignored her.

Then held out his palm to Mia.

She placed the dollar in his hand.

Damian folded it once.

Carefully.

“Sold.”

Elena stared at him.

Vanessa’s mouth fell open.

“You cannot be serious.”

Damian finally looked at her.

“I am.”

“That cake is for our engagement dinner.”

“Not anymore.”

“We have two hundred guests!”

“Order another.”

“You’re humiliating me in front of the staff.”

Damian’s eyes hardened.

“Interesting.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What?”

“You weren’t worried about humiliation when the person being humiliated was three.”

Silence.

Then Damian turned toward Elena.

“How long has she treated you like this?”

Elena’s stomach tightened.

Vanessa went very still.

Elena looked at her employer.

Then at the woman he was supposed to marry.

She could lie.

She should lie.

She needed this job.

Instead, Elena said quietly,

“A few months.”

Vanessa’s face drained of color.

And Damian’s expression became colder than Elena had ever seen it.

But the worst part wasn’t what Elena had just admitted.

It was what she remembered next.

The one with her name inside it.
