Chapter 9 - THE SECRET THEY HID

I sat down slowly.

“What do you mean?”

The woman on the phone took a breath.

“I work with your parents’ financial advisor.”

My stomach tightened.

“Okay.”

“Your father asked us to prepare changes months ago.”

“Changes to the trust?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Silence.

Then she said:

“Because they were afraid you would refuse.”

I frowned.

“Refuse what?”

The answer came slowly.

“They wanted you to help Jessica financially.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“What?”

“They believed you would agree if they presented it the right way.”

I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly everything connected.

The trust.

The cruise.

The family meeting.

The pressure.

“How much?”

The woman hesitated.

“Excuse me?”

“How much did they want from me?”

Another pause.

“Your portion of the inheritance would have been redirected into a fund for Jessica’s children.”

I laughed.

But it wasn’t funny.

It was almost unbelievable.

“They wanted me to give up my share?”

“They believed you would understand.”

Again.

That word.

Understand.

I thanked the woman and ended the call.

Then I just sat there.

Thinking.

Not about the money.

Not even about my parents.

About Emma.

Because I suddenly saw the future.

A future where Emma watched her cousins receive everything.

Again and again.

Vacations.

Help.

Opportunities.

And she would keep asking:

“Why not me?”

Just like I had.

When I got home, Emma was drawing at the kitchen table.

She looked up.

“Mommy!”

She held up her paper.

“I drew us.”

I smiled.

It was a picture of two people holding hands.

Me and her.

Above us was a giant castle.

Disney.

I felt tears coming.

“You still want to go?”

She nodded.

“But not because of Grandma.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

She looked at the drawing.

“Because I want to make happy memories with you.”

That was the moment.

The moment I realized my daughter was teaching me something.

She wasn’t looking for revenge.

She wasn’t trying to hurt anyone.

She just wanted to feel loved.

That night, I finished the reservation.

Two names.

Sarah Miller.

Emma Miller.

Destination:

Mediterranean.

Twenty-one days.

A new adventure.

A new memory.

A new chapter.

But before I closed my laptop…

My father sent another message.

This time there was no anger.

No explanation.

Only fear.

Sarah, please don’t do this. There’s something about the trust you don’t know yet. Call me.

I stared at the message.

Because for the first time…

My father sounded afraid.

Not disappointed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

And I knew one thing.

Whatever secret he was hiding…

It was bigger than money.

Bigger than Disney.

May you like

And when I found out the truth…

My entire family would change forever.
