Chapter 3 — The Family They Tried to Erase

Julian rushed toward Whitmore.
"You're lying!"
Whitmore simply handed him the documents.
Julian flipped through page after page.
His hands began trembling.
Each signature...
Each notarized seal...
Each county record...
Was authentic.
Eleanor grabbed the papers.
"No!"
"This can't be right!"
"My husband paid millions!"
Whitmore nodded.
"He certainly did."
"For buildings."
"For landscaping."
"For renovations."
"But not for the land."
He looked around at the assembled guests.
"The Vance family leased the property every year."
"They simply never realized who the beneficiaries were."
The realization hit Eleanor like a physical blow.
For years...
Every annual lease payment...
Every trust distribution...
Had quietly accumulated in accounts she believed were abandoned.
Accounts protected until both Carter daughters reunited.
Harper turned toward me.
"Dad knew they'd try to isolate you."
"He left everything so neither of us could claim it alone."
"He knew we'd have to find each other."
Tears streamed down my face.
"He never abandoned us..."
Harper shook her head.
"Never."
"He spent the last months of his life writing letters."
"They intercepted every one."
She reached into her backpack.
Inside were dozens of unopened envelopes.
Each one carried my name.
Each one had been returned.
Each one bore forwarding labels from addresses Julian had hidden from me.
Julian slowly sank into a chair.
"I..."
"I only wanted to protect our future."
"You lied to me for five years," I whispered.
"You convinced me my own sister abandoned me."
May you like
He couldn't answer.
Because there was nothing left to say.
