Chapter 11 - THE VAULT BENEATH THE RIVER

The tunnel ended at a massive steel door.

Julian inserted the golden key he had stolen from Evelyn.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

The lock did not move.

Eleanor leaned against the wall.

“The key opens the book.”

“Not the vault.”

Julian turned toward Evelyn.

“Then how do we open it?”

“I don’t know.”

Water rose around their ankles.

Evelyn examined the steel door.

Seven small circles formed a rose pattern.

They matched the stones on the original brooch.

“The brooch is the key,” she said.

Julian removed the empty brooch from his pocket.

He pressed it against the circles.

Six points aligned.

The center remained empty.

“The chip goes in the middle,” Eleanor said.

Julian inserted the black chip.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Inside were shelves filled with documents, videotapes, cash ledgers, and sealed boxes.

A small computer sat on a central desk.

Julian stared at the fortune before him.

“This is everything.”

Eleanor entered slowly.

“My husband built this vault.”

“He kept proof against everyone who worked for him.”

Evelyn saw a box labeled MARGARET VALE.

She opened it.

Inside was a cassette tape.

Her mother’s handwriting covered the label.

For Evelyn.

Julian moved toward her.

“Give me that.”

Eleanor stepped between them.

“No.”

Julian raised his gun.

“You spent your whole life protecting me.”

“I protected a child.”

“You are no longer that child.”

Eleanor looked at Evelyn.

“Play the tape.”

Evelyn inserted the cassette into an old recorder.

Her mother’s voice filled the vault.

“Evelyn, if you are hearing this, then I failed to stop them.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“I need you to know that your father did not die because he was weak.”

“He died because he refused to let powerful people buy his silence.”

“I hid the evidence where Eleanor’s husband could not find it.”

“The chip contains a copy.”

“But the original records are in the river vault.”

Julian looked around.

His eyes filled with greed.

Margaret’s voice continued.

“Eleanor knows more than she admits.”

“But she is not the greatest danger.”

“The greatest danger is Julian.”

Eleanor stared at her son.

Julian’s face went white.

“He was only seventeen when he learned what his father had built.”

“He helped arrange the crash that killed Evelyn’s father.”

Evelyn slowly turned toward him.

Julian tightened his grip on the gun.

“That is a lie.”

Margaret’s voice continued.

“Julian cut the brake line.”

“He believed his father would reward him.”

“But his father kept proof.”

“The proof is stored in box seventeen.”

Julian spun toward the shelves.

Evelyn saw the number seventeen behind him.

Julian raised his weapon.

Before he could fire, Eleanor stepped in front of Evelyn.

The gunshot exploded through the vault.
