Chapter 6 - WHAT MARIA KEPT

Nora read the message twice.

“Give that to Ruiz.”

Vincent did.

Then he sat in the kitchen while strangers searched the house he had built to keep strangers out.

Emma was at the far end of the table with a juice box she hadn’t opened.

“Is Mommy going to jail?”

“No one has decided that,” Vincent said.

He wouldn’t give her a promise he couldn’t keep.

Emma’s chin trembled.

“But you’re the boss.”

He looked toward the hallway, where Maria was speaking with the lawyer Nora had found.

“Not of everything.”

Emma considered that.

Then she slid the juice box toward him.

“You didn’t have breakfast.”

For a moment, he couldn’t speak.

Maria returned a few minutes later.

Her lawyer sat beside her.

“I kept the envelopes,” Maria said.

“The rent?”

“And the notes.”

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

Her eyes met his.

“Your brother said you knew.”

Vincent looked away first.

There had been mornings Maria arrived exhausted. Days she wore the same coat in freezing rain. Once, he had heard her asking the house manager whether she could take leftover soup home.

He had noticed.

He had done nothing.

Maria reached into her purse.

“Owen gave me this the night before he died.”

A grocery receipt, folded until the paper had gone soft.

On the back, in cramped handwriting:

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS, DON’T TRUST THE COPIES.

ASK WHO OWNS THE EMPTY ROOMS.

Below that was a storage-unit number.

“I went there,” Maria said. “It was empty.”

“When?”

“Two days after the funeral.”

Vincent studied the receipt.

There was another mark near the bottom.

Not a unit number.

A small drawing of a crooked bird.

Emma leaned forward.

“Daddy’s bird.”

Maria’s expression softened painfully.

“He drew those on everything.”

Emma lifted her doll.

“He put one on Lucy, too.”

Vincent looked at the doll’s faded dress.

Near the hem, almost hidden by a repair, was the same crooked bird.

Maria took the doll gently.

Her fingers found a line of stitches that didn’t match the rest.

“I thought his mother fixed this.”

The lawyer stopped her before she pulled at the seam.

“Let the detective see it.”

Ruiz came back to the kitchen.

Under her camera, a technician opened the doll’s lining.

Inside was a tiny memory card wrapped in plastic.

Maria covered her mouth.

May you like

Emma stared at the opening in Lucy’s back.

“Did Daddy leave me something?”
