Chapter 1 - ON HER KNEES

The first thing Alexander heard when he opened the front door was his daughter hitting the floor.
He froze.
His briefcase slipped from his hand.
Across the marble entryway, twelve-year-old Sofia lay beside a wooden stool, one palm pressed against the floor, the other covered in thick black shoe polish.
Standing over her was Veronica.
Alexander’s wife.
Her heel was still raised.
“Daddy…”
Sofia’s voice cracked.
Alexander stared at her.
Not because she had fallen.
Because of what she was wearing.
A gray maid’s dress hung loosely over Sofia’s thin shoulders. A white apron was tied around her waist. Her dark hair had been pulled into a messy knot.
She looked less like his daughter and more like a child dressed for someone else’s punishment.
Alexander’s face went still.
“What happened?”
Sofia immediately looked down.
“Nothing.”
Veronica gave an irritated sigh.
“Oh, please. Don’t be dramatic.”
Alexander crossed the room.
He reached Sofia first and pulled her gently to her feet.
Her hands were trembling.
“What is this?”
Sofia tried to hide them.
Too late.
Black polish covered her fingers and palms.
Alexander looked toward the stool.
A pair of Veronica’s expensive high heels sat on top of it, one shining perfectly, the other only half polished.
The room became very quiet.
Veronica folded her arms.
“She was cleaning my shoes.”
Alexander slowly turned his head.
“You had my daughter polish your shoes?”
“She lives in this house, Alexander. She can contribute.”
Sofia flinched.
Alexander noticed.
That tiny movement bothered him more than Veronica’s words.
He crouched in front of Sofia.
“Did she make you wear this?”
Sofia’s lips parted.
Veronica answered for her.
“I gave her chores.”
“I asked Sofia.”
Veronica’s eyes narrowed.
Sofia looked from her father to Veronica.
Fear moved across her face.
Alexander had seen that expression before.
Not here.
In courtrooms.
In employees afraid to speak in front of abusive bosses.
In people who believed the truth would cost them something.
“Sofia,” he said gently. “Look at me.”
She did.
And there were tears in her eyes.
Veronica scoffed.
“For God’s sake. She’s acting.”
Alexander untied the apron.
The knot was tight.
Too tight.
He pulled it away and let it fall to the floor.
Then he removed his suit jacket and placed it around Sofia’s shoulders.
Veronica laughed once.
“She should feel proud. At least she’s learning some humility.”
Alexander stood.
“What did you say to her?”
Veronica lifted her chin.
“I said a servant’s child should know how to serve.”
Sofia closed her eyes.
Alexander didn’t move.
For several seconds, he simply stared at his wife.
Then something changed in his expression.
Not anger.
Something colder.
“Repeat that.”
Veronica blinked.
“You heard me.”
“I want to hear you say it again.”
She stepped closer.
“Her mother worked in this house before you married her. Everyone knows that.”
Alexander’s jaw tightened.
“And?”
“And Sofia should stop walking around like some little princess just because you feel guilty.”
Sofia whispered, “Dad, please.”
Alexander looked at her.
That was when he saw the faint red mark around her wrist.
His eyes dropped to it.
He took Sofia’s hand carefully.
“What happened here?”
She pulled away.
“Nothing.”
Alexander stared at Veronica.
Veronica stared back.
Then Sofia whispered the words that changed everything.
“She locked me in Mom’s old room last night.”
Alexander’s face drained of color.
May you like
Veronica stopped smiling.
And upstairs, somewhere beyond the silent hallway, a door suddenly slammed shut.
