Chapter 2: The Mafia Boss Who Owed Me His Life

The first thing I noticed after Adrian Vale opened his eyes was not the fear in the room.

It was the silence.

A man like Adrian Vale was never supposed to look weak.

Not even while dying.

But now, lying beneath the surgical lights with blood covering his clothes and machines keeping him alive, the most feared man in Phoenix looked almost human.

Almost.

His fingers were still wrapped around my wrist.

Not tightly enough to hurt me.

Just enough to remind me that the man everyone called a monster was still fighting.

“Adrian,” Mateo Cruz whispered.

For the first time since I had seen him enter the hospital, Mateo looked afraid.

Not of enemies.

Not of police.

Not of death.

Of losing the man on that table.

Dr. Kessler stepped forward slowly, staring at the monitor in disbelief.

“This is impossible.”

I ignored him.

“His oxygen levels are dropping,” I said.

The room moved again.

Doctors rushed back.

Nurses adjusted the machines.

But Adrian refused to let go of my arm.

His gray eyes stayed locked on mine.

There was something strange in his expression.

Not anger.

Not suspicion.

Recognition.

As if he had seen me before.

But that was impossible.

I had never met Adrian Vale.

At least…

I thought I hadn’t.

“Who are you?” he whispered.

His voice was barely audible.

I looked at my name badge.

“Emily Hart.”

His eyes narrowed slightly.

Then his grip weakened.

And he passed out again.

Two hours later, I was sitting alone in the hospital break room, staring at my hands.

They were clean now.

But I could still see the blood.

I could still hear the flatline.

I could still remember everyone walking away.

Everyone except me.

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“Who is this?”

A deep voice responded.

“You saved Adrian Vale.”

My body went still.

“I don’t know who this is.”

“You need to listen carefully, Nurse Hart.”

The voice became colder.

“You don’t understand what you did.”

I frowned.

“I saved a patient.”

“No.”

A pause.

“You saved a war.”

The call ended.

By morning, the entire hospital had changed.

Security guards stood outside Adrian’s room.

Police vehicles surrounded the building.

News reporters waited outside the entrance.

Everyone wanted answers.

But nobody wanted to say his name too loudly.

Adrian Vale.

The billionaire businessman.

The underground king of Phoenix.

The man accused of controlling half the city’s criminal empire.

I had saved him.

And now everyone knew.

When I entered his room to check his vitals, Adrian was awake.

His wounds were heavily bandaged.

But his eyes were sharp.

“You should have let me die.”

The words surprised me.

I checked his monitor.

“Most people say thank you after someone saves their life.”

A faint smile appeared on his face.

“Most people don’t understand what happens after they save mine.”

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian stared toward the window.

“People will come for you.”

“Because I helped you?”

“Because you proved I can still be hurt.”

I didn’t answer.

For a moment, the terrifying mafia boss disappeared.

And I saw something else.

A tired man.

A man who had spent years believing nobody cared if he lived or died.

Then he looked back at me.

“Why did you do it?”

I frowned.

“Do what?”

“Risk your career. Risk your life.”

I thought about it.

Then answered honestly.

“Because you weren’t dead.”

For several seconds, Adrian said nothing.

Then something unexpected happened.

He smiled.

A real smile.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But real.

“You’re different, Emily Hart.”

I looked away.

“I’m just a nurse.”

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“You’re the first person in years who looked at me and saw a human being.”

Before I could respond, the door opened.

Mateo walked in.

His face was serious.

“We have a problem.”

Adrian’s expression changed instantly.

“What happened?”

Mateo looked at me.

Then back at Adrian.

“Someone inside the hospital tried to finish the job.”

The room went cold.

May you like

Adrian slowly looked at me.

“They know about her.”
