Chapter 13 - What Lily Said

The courtroom was smaller than Lily expected.

No grand staircase.

No polished audience waiting for a speech.

Just worn carpet, crowded benches, and a clock that seemed too loud.

Grant wore a navy suit.

He looked concerned.

Lily hated that expression most.

His attorney described a family in crisis.

A grieving father.

An unstable household.

A child exposed to strangers with financial motives.

Then Claire stood.

She introduced the medical review.

The forged authorization.

The service-corridor recording.

The hotel incident report.

The voicemail.

Grant stopped looking concerned.

He began writing on a yellow pad.

The judge asked whether Lily wanted to speak.

Her father looked at her.

This time, he didn’t answer.

“Yes,” Lily said.

The judge addressed her directly.

“You don’t have to stand.”

“I know.”

She positioned her chair beside the witness table.

Her hands were steady until she placed them in her lap.

Then they shook.

She let them.

“What do you want me to understand?” the judge asked.

Lily looked at Grant.

Then at her father.

“Everybody keeps talking about protecting me.”

The room went still.

“Uncle Grant said my aunt upset me.

He said Rosa was bad for me.

He said the medicine helped me rest.”

Grant’s attorney shifted.

Lily kept going.

“I was tired all the time.

When I asked about therapy, people told me not to get my hopes up.

When I asked about Mom, people changed the subject.”

Her father lowered his head.

“I don’t know how much I’ll walk.

Dr. Patel doesn’t know either.

But that should be something I find out with people helping me.

It shouldn’t be decided because somebody signed my dad’s name.”

The judge nodded.

“Where do you feel safe?”

“With Aunt Beth.”

“And your father?”

Lily turned toward him.

He looked terrified.

Good, she thought.

Then she felt bad for thinking it.

Then she stopped feeling bad.

“I want him to visit,” she said.

“But I don’t want him deciding everything alone.”

Andrew’s eyes closed.

He nodded.

The judge denied Grant’s emergency request.

Existing parental authority remained with Andrew, but the agreed temporary arrangement at Beth’s would continue while Lily’s care and safety were reviewed.

Grant approached Andrew outside the courtroom.

“You’re letting them destroy us.”

Andrew stepped between him and Lily.

“No,” he said.

“I’m finally letting them look.”

Two detectives waited near the elevators.

One asked Grant to come with them.

Grant glanced back at Lily.

For the first time since the accident, he looked like the person who couldn’t move.
