Chapter 1 - DON’T PUT THAT RING ON HER

“DAD! DON’T PUT THAT RING ON HER!”
Nine-year-old Mia Carter’s scream ripped through the chapel one second before the gold band touched Vanessa Blake’s finger.
Daniel Carter froze.
So did the priest.
Nearly eighty wedding guests turned at once.
Mia stood halfway down the aisle in a pale blue dress, breathing hard, her dark hair falling loose around her face. In both hands, she clutched a large red envelope like it was the only thing keeping her alive.
“Mia?” Daniel whispered.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
Not slowly.
Instantly.
“What is she doing here?” Vanessa snapped.
Daniel frowned. “She’s my daughter. Of course she’s here.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
Mia took another step.
“Dad, you can’t marry her.”
A murmur rolled through the chapel.
Daniel’s younger brother, Eric, stood beside him as best man. He leaned close.
“Danny, handle this.”
Daniel ignored him.
He stepped away from the altar.
“Mia, honey, what happened?”
Mia’s eyes were wet, but her voice was steady.
“She lied to you.”
Vanessa laughed sharply.
“Oh, for God’s sake.”
Mia lifted the envelope.
“She’s already married.”
The room exploded with whispers.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Vanessa stared at Mia.
For half a second, fear flashed across her face.
Then it vanished.
“That is a disgusting lie.”
“It’s not!” Mia shouted. “I saw the paper.”
“Who gave you that?”
Mia hesitated.
Vanessa moved fast.
Too fast.
She stormed down the steps, grabbed the envelope from Mia’s hands, tore it open, glanced at the document inside—
—and ripped it in half.
“Vanessa!” Daniel shouted.
She tore it again.
And again.
Pieces of paper fluttered across the chapel floor.
Mia screamed, “Stop!”
Daniel grabbed Vanessa’s wrist.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Vanessa jerked free.
“Protecting us!”
“From what?”
“From whoever put this garbage in your daughter’s hands.”
She turned toward the second row.
Her eyes locked on a woman in a dark green dress.
Rachel Monroe.
Mia’s nanny.
Vanessa pointed at her.
“She did this.”
Rachel’s face drained of color.
“What?”
“You’ve hated me from the beginning,” Vanessa said. “You filled Mia’s head with lies because you couldn’t stand the idea of Daniel marrying someone else.”
“That’s insane.”
“Is it?”
Rachel stood.
“I never gave Mia that envelope.”
Vanessa turned to Daniel, tears suddenly filling her eyes.
“She’s trying to destroy our wedding.”
Daniel looked from Vanessa to Rachel.
Then to his daughter.
Mia was trembling.
“Mia,” he said softly, “where did you get the envelope?”
Mia swallowed.
“From your office.”
Eric’s head snapped toward her.
Daniel noticed.
“Which office?”
“The one upstairs at the house.”
Eric stepped forward.
“She shouldn’t have been in there.”
Mia looked directly at him.
“I wasn’t looking for anything.”
Her small hand tightened around Daniel’s sleeve.
“I heard Uncle Eric talking.”
Every eye in the chapel shifted.
Eric’s smile disappeared.
Daniel stared at his brother.
“Talking to who?”
Mia pointed toward the altar.
“To Vanessa.”
Silence.
Eric gave a short laugh.
“This is getting ridiculous.”
But before he could say another word, a man near the back of the chapel slowly stood.
He was holding a video camera.
The wedding videographer.
“I think,” he said carefully, “you should all see something.”
Vanessa went completely still.
Daniel turned.
“What?”
The videographer swallowed.
“My camera was recording before the ceremony.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
May you like
And Mia whispered the four words that made Daniel’s blood run cold.
“They didn’t know that.”
