Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Valeria didn’t tell Alejandro.

Not immediately.

That night she sat alone in the servants’ quarters staring at the hospital bill on her phone.

214,600 pesos.

Her mother had sold jewelry.

Her uncle had borrowed money.

Valeria had taken every shift she could find.

They were still nowhere close.

Her phone rang again.

Same blocked number.

She answered.

“You have something we want.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“The recorder.”

Valeria’s heart pounded.

“It isn’t mine.”

“Get it.”

“No.”

A pause.

Then the man said her brother’s name.

“Diego is in Room 314.”

Valeria stood so fast the chair fell.

“If you touch him—”

“You won’t be there to stop us.”

The call ended.

Valeria ran.

She made it halfway down the hallway before Alejandro stepped out of his office.

“Where are you going?”

“My brother.”

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re crying.”

“I said nothing.”

Alejandro blocked the door.

Valeria snapped.

“Move!”

“Tell me what happened.”

“They know where my brother is!”

Alejandro went still.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

She showed him the phone.

“They want the recorder.”

Alejandro’s face changed instantly.

“Calderón!”

Within minutes three men were sent to the hospital.

Alejandro ordered Diego moved to a secure private floor.

Valeria stared at him.

“I can’t afford that.”

“I didn’t ask you to.”

“I don’t want charity.”

“This isn’t charity.”

“Then what is it?”

“Responsibility.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Your family threatens mine and then you pay the bill?”

“My family didn’t threaten yours.”

“Someone connected to this house did.”

Alejandro had no answer.

Valeria looked away.

“I should leave.”

Mateo appeared at the end of the hallway.

Barefoot.

Holding his blanket.

He had heard her.

His face fell.

“No.”

Valeria’s heart twisted.

She knelt.

“I’m not leaving right now.”

He rushed into her arms.

Alejandro watched.

After Mateo went back to bed, Alejandro said quietly, “If you walk out that gate, whoever called you wins.”

“My brother could die.”

“I’ll protect him.”

“You couldn’t protect your wife.”

The words came out before Valeria could stop them.

Silence.

Alejandro flinched as if she had struck him.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

He looked away.

“You’re right.”

Valeria felt worse.

Alejandro took a breath.

“I failed Lucía.”

Then he faced her.

“I will not fail your brother.”

The next morning, a surgeon called Valeria.

A donor fund had covered Diego’s operation.

Every peso.

She marched into Alejandro’s office.

“You paid it.”

“Yes.”

“I told you—”

“You told me you didn’t want charity.”

He slid a paper toward her.

“It isn’t charity.”

The paper was an employment contract.

Childcare consultant.

Salary more than she had ever imagined making.

Valeria stared.

“I clean floors.”

“You reached my son when eighteen specialists couldn’t.”

“I’m not a therapist.”

“I don’t need another therapist.”

Alejandro leaned back.

“I need someone who listens.”

She looked at the contract.

Then at him.

Before she could answer, a guard burst inside.

“Señor.”

“What?”

“Dr. Vega is gone.”

Alejandro stood.

“How?”

The guard hesitated.

“Someone inside the house let him out.”

And the security footage showed exactly who had opened the door.

Doña Socorro.
